Blog:Sports Minister puts pressure on FA over England captain’s affair

Sunday, January 31, 2010 | 10:34 pm

The Football Association came under pressure from the Government to strip John Terry of the England captaincy last night after more details emerged of his affair with the ghd hair straighteners partner of one of his former team-mates.

Gerry Sutcliffe, the Sports Minister, said that he will ask the FA to explain its stance on Terry, whose position has been under threat since he failed with a High Court injunction to stop newspapers reporting his extramarital affair with Vanessa Perroncel, a lingerie model and former partner of Wayne Bridge, his England and one-time Chelsea team-mate.

Ms Perroncel, the mother of Bridge’s child and Terry’s neighbour in the Surrey village of Oxshott, is reported to have had an abortion after becoming pregnant Ghd by the England captain.

The revelations have left Terry, Britain’s highest-paid footballer, on £150,000 a week, fighting to save his marriage. His distraught wife, Toni, has fled to Dubai with their three-year-old twins, Georgie and Summer, while he stayed at home and trained with Chelsea yesterday. The couple have been in telephone contact. Sources close to Terry said last night that saving his marriage was his “only priority”.

Mr Sutcliffe said: “On the field John Terry is a fantastic player and a good England captain, but to be the captain of England you have got to have wider Mbt responsibilities for the country, and clearly if these allegations are proven — and at the moment they are only allegations — then it does call into question his role as England captain. I speak to the FA on a regular basis, so I will be asking what their viewpoint is and we will see what comes of it.”

As well as criticism from Mr Sutcliffe and former England players such as Martin Keown, there has been a growing clamour from the national team’s supporters.

On the members-only England fans message board on the FA’s official website, Terry was described as having “the morals of a rat”, with most supporters calling for him to be stripped of the captain’s armband. Radio phone-in shows have also received similar calls.

In contrast with Chelsea, which issued a statement on Saturday night offering Terry their “full support” over a “personal matter”, the FA has so far declined to comment ghd straighteners. Lord Triesman, the FA’s chairman, and Ian Watmore, the chief executive, are firmly expected to entrust Fabio Capello, England’s manager, with the decision on whether or not Terry should retain the captaincy.

The £4.8 million-a-year Italian coach has been monitoring developments from his holiday home in Switzerland, where he is recovering from a knee operation, and has not yet spoken to Terry about the allegations.

Bridge has yet to comment on the reports beyond a statement issued through his lawyer in which he asked for his privacy to be respected.

Three of his Manchester City team-mates, however, made a show of solidarity with him yesterday. Bridge did not play in the match owing to a knee injury mbt sale , but Nigel de Jong, Stephen Ireland and Carlos Tévez all revealed T-shirts bearing the slogan “Team Bridge” as they left the pitch after their 2-0 victory over Portsmouth.

Blog:ITV shareholders ask whether ‘unproven’ Crozier can be worth £16m

Sunday, January 31, 2010 | 9:57 pm

ITV was facing shareholder Mbt anger last night over the near-£16 million pay package for Adam Crozier, the broadcaster’s choice as its next chief executive.

The Coronation Street and Britain’s Got Talent broadcaster will hammer out the details of Mr Crozier’s £15 million-to-£16 million five-year pay deal in the next week, but there are indications already that large investors will be looking hard at the remuneration package.

ITV has said that it will not involve shareholders in the final stages of the pay negotiations — a decision that is likely to anger some, who have called into question the ability of the Royal Mail chief executive to turn around the business.

One big shareholder described Mr Crozier as “totally unproven”. He added: “The pity of it is one tends to associate the Royal Mail with bad management and trouble with the unions. More recently, it was six of one and half a dozen of the other.”

The shareholder also said that it was not immediately clear Ghd whether Mr Crozier had the specialist expertise to tackle programming and regulatory issues. He said: “There is a regulatory impasse about what the company is allowed to do and what it is not. It has decisions to make about the balance of programming — what to make and what to buy in. It is also an industry where there is an enormous rate of change.”

Mr Crozier, 46, is the choice of Archie Norman, ITV’s chairman, formerly a Conservative MP and boss of Asda, the supermarket group.

One shareholder said: “It’s Archie Norman’s first big appointment — the spotlight is definitely on him, as well. It may yet be the case that ITV becomes the company that does for his mbt sale reputation.”

Mr Crozier’s pay deal is understood to include a salary of £750,000 to £800,000 a year, plus performance-related bonuses, based on ITV’s existing management pay structures. ITV said that the principles of Mr Crozier’s pay, which conform with the remuneration structure of other senior executives, had been agreed. They included “short-term” bonuses, paid annually, that could reach 150 per cent of basic salary, plus long-term bonuses, paid after three to five years under ITV’s performance share plan. The criteria that Mr Crozier will have to meet have yet to be published, but it is understood that he will be judged on a comparison of ITV with other broadcasters, as well as on the value of the company relative to the rest of the stock market.

Mr Crozier received £6.4 million over the past five years at the Royal Mail. He is expected to join ITV in April, after taking a pay cheque for his last year at the postal ghd straighteners operator that is expected to reach £2 million. Royal Mail said that no date had yet been agreed for his departure.

ITV shares doubled in the past year as a result of a cost-cutting drive by John Cresswell, its acting chief executive. Mr Cresswell will leave after handing over to Mr Crozier.

The search for a chief executive at ITV has been fraught with failed negotiations. An attempt to hire Tony Ball, the former BSkyB chief executive, fell apart last year over Mr Ball’s Mbt shoes  demand for £42 million over five years.

Blog:Faulty Toyota owners must have cars repaired rather than be refunded

Sunday, January 31, 2010 | 8:38 pm

Owners of Toyota cars suspected of having faulty accelerator pedals will have to take their vehicle to the nearest Toyota centre for repairs rather than be given a refund MBT Shoes, the company indicated yesterday.

The carmaker, which caused panic last week when it announced a recall of eight of its models, said that it had been inundated with calls from its 1.3 million UK customers.

Certain types of Aygo, Yaris, Avensis and Corolla are affected by the fault, which causes sudden and unexpected acceleration that leaves the driver unable to stop the car in time. It emerged on Friday that the Peugeot 107 and Citroën C1, which are built at the same plant in the Czech Republic and use the same parts as the Toyota Aygo, could be similarly affected.

Toyota said yesterday that it would tell the owners of affected vehicles this week that they could not expect refunds. A spokesman said that the policy was in “in line with industry recall procedures”, adding that the recall arrangements were still being finalised.

Consumer organisations said that Toyota appeared to be handling the recall well.

But Toyota drivers in Britain were yesterday venting their frustration with the company in online forums.

One owner, described as Elaine from Sandhurst, wrote on a Toyota owners’ forum that she had not noticed any problems, but “a heavier footed friend drove my car and said the accelerator was sticking. We put it down to the mat moving. Maybe we were wrong?”

Mrs Flannery, from Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, wrote that her son crashed a Yaris while working for Toyota. “My son claimed then that the vehicle had a fault but he was suspended immediately pending further investigations,” she said.

“The final report, after weeks of waiting, was that there was no fault to be found and my son was given a straight written warning which ‘blackened’ his name. He was adamant then, Ghd and now, that there was a fault on the pedal sticking, but Toyota didn’t want to listen.”

Another owner, using the name Techy, said his four-year-old Yaris had been recalled three times already. He said: “I will be claiming for my fuel costs here … What on earth is going on at Toyota, they used to be a byword for quality, I have had seven Toyotas and the last two — one made in UK one in France — have been riddled with problems and in the case of the Yaris some never resolved! I am totally fed-up with my time being wasted in this way.”

The AA said: “Some manufacturers have dragged their heels in similar circumstances in the past. But Toyota has done the right thing in trying to put customers’ minds at rest and for that it should be applauded.”

The company said that its engineers were working around the clock to fix the fault. Toyota said that it had received ten times the number of calls that it would usually take as anxious customers demanded more information. It added that it would not warn drivers against using their vehicles because it considered the mbt sale cars safe to drive, as the fault occurred only in “rare instances”.

A Toyota spokesman said that there had been no reports of accidents in the UK and Europe as a result of the fault. However, there were 26 reports of faults with the cars in the UK before last Friday — a figure that is expected to rise.

The Times reported on Saturday the experiences of Derek McCall. 81, who said that his Auris had accelerated out of control, crashed through a wall and into a garden.

Mr McCall, 81, of Ickenham, West London, said: “I shot out forward. I was lucky I didn’t crash into my neighbour’s car. I should probably have stopped driving right then but I didn’t.

“The car kept racing forward every time I touched the accelerator. As I came round a left turn, the car lurched forward like a Formula One vehicle. I saw a white van coming towards me. I was going too fast; we were heading for a head-on collision. I managed to steer out of the way and straight into a parked car — but at least I missed the ghd hair straighteners van.”

He then reversed and the car “shot backwards” before “spinning in a semi-circle, hitting the kerb, flipping backwards and crashing through a wall”.

Toyota said that, once it had established the individual vehicles that had the fault, it would trace the owners via the DVLA database and inform them.

The safety problems are expected to reduce future Mbt sales of Toyota cars severely. The National Automobile Dealers Association warned that US dealers could lose as much as $2.47 billion (£1.54 billion) in combined monthly revenue because of the halt of sales of the eight models, including the popular Camry and Corolla sedans.

Trying to quell fears, a Toyota spokesman said that the number of calls “quietened down yesterday and even more so today”.

He said: “Most customers are simply calling to confirm the latest information directly from Toyota.”

Blog:Australian women’s final between Justine Henin and Serena Williams match made in heaven

Friday, January 29, 2010 | 9:26 pm

Stripped to the waist, watching Laura Robson take her place in the final of the Australian Open junior girls’ singles, was Carlos Rodriguez, who might just be about to relish a discount Mbt shoes triumph he could not possibly have considered when he was feeding balls to children at Justine Henin’s tennis school six months ago.

Rodriguez has been Henin’s coach since her junior French Open success 13 years ago and today, on Rod Laver Arena, their eyes will meet after every rally in the final of the women’s singles against Serena Williams. They have an understanding built over years of absolute trust, the Argentinian and the Belgian, both preparing to relish a storyline that we thought was fanciful the first time around.

Whatever Kim Clijsters can do, perhaps Henin can do just as well. Clijsters came out of retirement, having had her first child, and won the US Open with only two tournaments under her Ghd belt by way of a warm-up. Henin entered this championship in what you would have said was a similarly undercooked state and here she is on the last day, perky and primed.

This time last year, she was in the Democratic Republic of Congo, working for Unicef, the children’s charity. How things can change.

Back in the world that she thought she had left behind for ever, Henin has played as if her sabbatical was but a dream. In the semi-final, she dropped a single game to Zheng Jie, of China. Now Williams stands in the way.

“I can’t say that I’m sleeping very well in the last few nights,” Henin, 27, said. “But it [the victory over Zheng] was the kind of match I probably needed as I struggled a little bit physically in the last few matches. Today I hit for an hour, went to the gym and worked a little more. I needed to push myself Mbt a little bit more.

“My muscles are starting to recover. Of course, tomorrow, with the tension and everything — the situation of a grand-slam final — I’ll have other things to deal with. When you have a lot of fatigue, especially at the end of a tournament like this, you never sleep well because it takes a lot of energy to compete.

“This is a special occasion but I see it as an opportunity to play the No 1 player in the world, which is more than a dream for me. It’s the perfect challenge. I love this kind of situation.”

For Williams, 28, this is a fifth Australian Open final and she has never lost on the last day. Having warmed up by taking the doubles title with Venus, her sister, against Liezel Huber and Cara Black, the No 1 seeds, Serena could hardly be any, well, serener.

“I’m a lot more upbeat today than I was yesterday,” she said. “Against Justine, I expect it will be very much a mental battle, about who wants it more and is willing to go the extra ghd straighteners step. I think it will be a defining match for both of us.”

That Rodriguez should take time out from his schedule to follow the progress of Robson suggests that he did not down sticks entirely when he was away from the game. He followed trends, watched results, noted potential.

Robson was pretty much contented with her form yesterday, when she beat Kristyna Pliskova 6-3, 6-1. Today she plays the Czech’s twin, Karolina, for a second grand-slam junior title Mbt, after her Wimbledon success in 2008.

Blog:BP turns to former BHP Billiton chief

Friday, January 29, 2010 | 8:46 pm

BP moved to strengthen its board yesterday with the appointment of Paul Anderson, a former chief executive of BHP Billiton, the mining Ghd company. He was once tipped as the oil group’s next chairman.

Mr Anderson, who has joined BP as a non-executive director, is to fill a void left by the departure of Sir Tom McKillop, the former Royal Bank of Scotland chairman, who was forced to step down from the board last year after the bank’s dramatic collapse.

The seat on the BP board has been vacant since Sir Tom left in March last year, after the oil group’s shareholders had complained that he was “damaged goods” and a liability to the company after the crisis of mismanagement at RBS, which is now controlled by British taxpayers.

Mr Anderson, who ran BHP Billiton between 1998 and 2002 and went on to head Duke Energy, which he transformed into one of America’s biggest utility companies, will not take on the exact mbt sale responsibilities held by the former RBS chairman, a BP spokesman said.

His appointment is the start of what is likely to be a year of significant boardroom changes at BP by Carl-Henric Svanberg, the new chairman, and Tony Hayward, the chief executive. Three other non-executive directors at BP are set to retire this year or early in 2011: Sir Ian Prosser, deputy chairman; DeAnne Julius, chairman of BP’s remuneration committee; and Erroll Davis, who serves on the safety committee.

The oil group’s board met this week for the first time under the leadership of Mr Svanberg, the former Ericsson chief executive who took up the role on January 1, to approve Mr Anderson’s appointment.

As BHP Billiton’s former chief executive, at one stage he was viewed as a leading candidate to replace Peter Sutherland, the former BP chairman, after Paul Skinner, the former Rio Tinto chairman, was forced to bow out of the race last summer following a row with shareholders ghd hair straighteners.

The appointment comes as BP prepares to announce on Tuesday an expected 80 per cent surge in quarterly profits. City analysts expect the company, the second-biggest in Britain by market value, to record profits of about $4.7 billion (£2.9 billion) for the final three months of 2009.

BHP Billiton said that Mr Anderson, who is also a non-executive director of BAE Systems, the defence group, and Spectra Energy, an American natural gas company, had made an “extremely valuable” contribution to the company.

“I understand Paul’s desire to take up one of his last board appointments in the industry where he spent much of his working life,” Don Argus, the BHP Billiton chairman, said.

BHP Billiton has appointed Malcolm Broomhead, chairman of Asciano, an Australian infrastructure company, and Carolyn Hewson, a former investment banker Mbt with Schroders Australia, as non-executive directors.

Blog:Top comprehensives are luring private pupils, Good Schools Guide says

Friday, January 29, 2010 | 7:39 pm

A premier league of comprehensive schools is leaving behind the rest of the state sector and luring middle-class parents away from private MBT Shoes education, according to The Good Schools Guide, which is published next week.

It says the number of excellent state schools is growing and providing greater competition to independent schools. Parents who previously would have dismissed their neighbourhood school are no longer automatically paying thousands of pounds in school fees or moving to grammar school areas.

Twenty seven per cent of the schools recommended in the annual guide are state schools, the highest since the book began, and an increase from the 25 per cent last year.

Seven in ten of the state secondary schools it praises are comprehensives that do not cream off the brightest pupils. No new grammar schools were added to the Ghd guide this year.

For only the second time it recommends an academy, the semi-independent state schools set up to replace failing schools in inner city areas, which traditionally take a high number of children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Well-off parents are discovering that their local schools, some of which had poor reputations just a few years ago, are now thriving and over-subscribed, particularly in London, resulting in a broad social mix of pupils.

Sue Fieldman, regional editor of The Good Schools Guide, said: “The best of the state schools are getting better and growing in number, and not just in middle class areas. Some of the best state schools are now competing with private schools, not on class sizes and amenities, on which the private sector always wins hands down, but in providing an excellent all-round education.

“These better state schools are attracting parents, who traditionally would have their cheque books out ready for private schooling, but who can see that the state school on their doorstep can provide what they are looking for.

“Having two inner London academies in the guide mbt sale highlights that it is not just state schools in affluent middle-class areas that can get it right.”

Schools in the guide include Fox Primary School in Kensington, West London, which is described as thriving on “multiculturalism and diverse influences, with up to 15 nationalities in one class”. The guide adds: “Seventeen per cent of pupils are on free school meals. Yet there are high number of professional parents — barristers, journalists, diplomats, authors, artists and musicians. One parent spoke of the relief she felt that her daughter wouldn’t grow up thinking everyone had a second home in Barbados.”

Sir John Cass’s Foundation and Redcoat Secondary School, in East London, is described by the guide as “a beacon of excellence in a deprived area of London, which takes in students with low levels of ghd hair straighteners attainment and sends the majority off to university with commendable exam results. A strong head and committed staff insist on good behaviour, provide expert teaching and inspire high aspirations.”

About two thirds of the pupils are from Bangladeshi families and demand for places is high, with 1,200 applicants for 180 spaces last year. In 2008 the school had its first successful applicant to Oxford or Cambridge, and three had Oxbridge offers last year. The background of pupils at its sister primary school ranges from two families sharing a flat, to parents who own an apartment in the Barbican and a house in the country.

Mossbourne Community Academy in Hackney is in the guide for the first time. It says the school is “proof that with sufficient resources and the right direction, the children who life intended to fail can succeed.” Mossbourne, the two Sir John Cass schools and Fox Primary were all rated outstanding Mbt  by Ofsted in their latest reports.
