Blog:Snowboard maker surfs for gold

Monday, March 1, 2010 | 10:54 pm

SHANGHAI – ghd Watching the Winter Olympics from his home in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, Shi Dingwei was not only excited by the better-than-expected performance of the Chinese team, but also proud of the fact that snowboards used by the athletes from various countries were made in his workshop.

“We feel so proud of our products and all our hard work has paid off,” said Shi, general manager of Ningbo Matrix Sportgoods Co Ltd.

Ningbo Matrix is a relative small enterprise in the industrial heartland of eastern China. But it is one of the leading makers of winter-sports equipment in the country. So far, the company has remained an OEM manufacturer of products designed and ghd straighteners  contracted by foreign customers.

“The snowboards (used in the Olympics) didn’t have our own logo on them, but we could easily recognize them by the design patterns,” Shi added.

The majority of SIMS-brand snowboards that the American team used were made by Ningbo Matrix, SIMS’s major OEM manufacturer.

The US snowboard team won a total of two gold medals, one silver and two bronzes, outperforming any other national team during the just ended Winter Olympics.

Although only an original equipment  ghd hair straighteners manufacturer of its US partner, Matrix has enjoyed rapid development since it’s founding a decade ago. The company currently exports snowboards to more than 40 nations and regions, including North America, Europe, Australia and Southeast Asia.

In 2000, the parent company of Matrix, which is a mould maker, received an order from the US for making a snowboard mould. After fulfilling the order, Shi, a graduate from Wuhan University of Hydraulic and  MBT shoes Electrical Engineering, sensed a great opportunity.

“I feel the sports equipment will be a sunrise industry. In Xiangshan, there are a number of mould makers, and we have to diversify our businesses,” Shi said.

Matrix’s low cost and high quality helped it weather the financial crisis last year, while many other snowboard makers saw great drops in sales or flat out shut down.

“We produced more than 100,000 snowboards in  ghd  2009, and realized a total of 50 million yuan in revenue, up 30 percent from 2008,” Shi said.

However, Shi admitted their business was not immune to the world economic slowdown. “We expected 50 percent growth in 2009, but it slowed to 30 percent as more snowboard fans cut spending on the sport.”

Being the world’s largest producer, China does not have many snowboard fans, and nearly all of the 20 snowboard makers centered in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu provinces are export oriented.

However, in Europe, Australia and North America, ghd hair straighteners  snowboards are popular winter gifts.

“Things are getting better. With the growing spending power of domestic sports fans, we will have more orders from China, and this will also help us popularize Matrix-branded snowboards,” Shi said.

In 2004 two Australian companies, Force and Xetrov, ghd straighteners co-invested $1.15 million in Matrix, thus becoming overseas shareholders.

Applicants flock to acting schools

Competition to ghd  get into Beijing’s top acting schools is tight and applicants often resort to unorthodox measures to stand out. During an interview at the Beijing Film Academy five years ago, an applicant slapped an interviewer across the face in an attempt to be remembered.

“They are so desperate to get into the top performing art schools that they do stupid things,” said a witness to the incident who refused to give his name.

The competition is only getting more intense. The overwhelming number of applicants to acting and drama colleges this year even surprised long-time faculty.

“For the first two days more than 1200 students come here to register, about 300 more than last year,” said Wang Jingsong, director of  ghd straighteners  performing arts at the Beijing Film Academy.

Applications to the Beijing Film Academy and the Central Academy of Drama, perhaps the two most prestigious performing arts school in the capital, begin in mid-February.

Of the more than 4,000 prospective students who have so far applied to the Beijing Film Academy, only 60 will get in as performing arts majors and 20 as crosstalk majors.

Almost every applicant dreams of becoming a movie or television star and few are deterred by the long odds of even getting into school.

“It might be too hard to get into, but it is worthy trying,” said Jin Shuai, a high school senior from Hunan province came to Beijing with her mother for the registration.

She said he is fighting to get in to her dream school. But Jin said he is aware how hard it will be to secure a spot. “Rumors say that if a male applicant is shorter than 180cm, he won’t get in,” he said.

Unrealistic expectations are one potential pitfall for ghd hair straighteners hopeful applicants. An experienced actor recalled that, “Some applicants were over confident.”

When he was waiting for his retest for the Beijing Film Academy, a boy in front of him in the line said he was good at dancing. But when asked how long he had been dancing, the boy said “I learned from a TV show yesterday.”

But even those lucky enough to get admitted may see their dreams of becoming a star fade once they finish school, said MBT shoes Cheng Cheng, who graduated from Beijing Film Academy in 2008 and is currently acting on television shows while getting a master’s degree from the academy.

She still vividly remembers going through the application process, with crowds of parents waiting outside the interview room, hoping their child would be a superstar one day.

“I remember being asked to act as an animal; the teachers there didn’t care if you are professional or not, they care more about your passion, your personality and your thoughts,” she said.

But now her attitude toward acting and being ghd a star has changed. “I guess every student who comes here is dreaming to be surrounded by flowers and applauses one day, but it is not easy,” Cheng said.

“Actors or actresses are just normal people, and acting is just a job, like many other professions,” she added.

Cheng has been acting as the lead actress in the television show China Family.

Song Yanzhou experienced the same disparity  ghd hair straighteners between dreams and reality.

Song is from Lanzhou, Gansu province and loved drama so much that he applied two years in a row to the Central Academy of Drama.

Song finally got into the performing arts school in 2004 on his second try. Yet when he was actually sitting in the classroom, he said he felt lost and stressed.

“So many students were more talented than me; some even began acting in movies and commercials before they went to college,” he said.

Few will become famous at all and those ghd straighteners that do will have to work hard for it, said Wang.

“Opportunity only comes to those who are prepared,” he added.

Blog:Courageous kid leaves hospital after donati

Sunday, February 28, 2010 | 9:48 pm

The brave young boy MBT who donated bone marrow to save the life of his dangerously ill mother was discharged from hospital yesterday.

Shao Shuai, the 12-year-old boy from Xuzhou in Jiangsu province, has regained his appetite following the operation and was smiling yesterday.

“I feel good now, and so does   ghd hair straighteners my mother,” the 12-year-old told METRO yesterday afternoon as he tucked into a bowl of rice and kungpao chicken.

The boy’s mother, Shao Dan, 42, is in a stable condition and under close observation, said Wu Tong, the doctor in charge of the marrow transplant operation.

Shao Dan, who divorced Shao Shuai’s father when the boy was one year old, came to Beijing alone six years ago to find work. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the end of 2008. Shao Shuai and his grandma journeyed to Beijing last July to ghd take care of her, at which point Shao Shuai took a year out of school.

The 12-year-old said he knew his role the   ghd hair straighteners moment he was told his bone marrow could save his mother’s life.

“My blood came from her, so it is right that it now runs through her,” Shao Shuai said.

In addition to the life-saving marrow, financial donations have been plentiful. By Sunday, more than 300,000 yuan was given by individuals, enterprises and charity groups. Among them, a Beijing couple came to Daopei Hospital on Wednesday to   ghd straighteners donate 100,000 yuan.

Yesterday was the traditional Lantern Festival, which this year was particularly special for Shao’s family. Many Beijing citizens made the trip to their hospital room to offer some company on the day – some teachers have even invited Shao Shuai to study  ghd in Beijing at their schools.

Dang Guoying, Shao Shuai’s 73-year-old grandma, was also deeply touched.

“I don’t know what to say except ‘thank you’. Thank you to everyone who treated us so well,” she said yesterday.

“Shao Shuai told me he wanted to donate    ghd straighteners the fruit, nutritional food, and milk that people sent us to orphans in Beijing. We were given love and we want more people to share in it,” Dang said.

Blog: Beijing is a treasure trove for secondhand book collectors

Sunday, February 28, 2010 | 9:24 pm

A 1957 edition of ghd  Philosopher Zhang Dainian’s An Outline of Chinese Philosophy is one of book collector Feng Kechen’s favorites among his collection of secondhand books.

Feng is an engineer of Nokia China Research Center in Beijing and a book-addict who spends every weekend he has free browsing the used bookstores around town.

He has been collecting secondhand books since 1991, his passion fired by the purchase of a copy of the periodical Reading first published by  MBT SDX Joint Publishing Company in 1979.

Feng is planning to send his An Outline of Chinese Philosophy to Tsinghua University, as he has discovered that the university’s Zhang Dainian archive does not yet include the book.

As Feng says, one of the joys of collecting secondhand books is being able to share them with other book lovers, as the value of books lies in using and reading it.

“Like Feng Kechen, most gold-seekers at secondhand book markets belong to the frontline of intellectuals, aged from 30 to 50.  ghd hair straighteners A love of reading is their hallmark, said Hu Bin, who is better known as Hu Tong, who founded Booyee.com in 2001 – one of first online secondhand book stores in China.

Many factors such as author, contents, publishing date, times of printing, and historical significance contribute to a book’s desirability as a    ghd hair straighteners collectable, and to its price.

The original price tag is no longer a judgment of a book. A book with a price tag of 0.05 yuan may be worth hundreds of yuan, while some best-selling books tagged at scores of yuan commonly sell at 1 yuan on the secondhand market.

However, a highly sought after and prized used book can be priced as high as thousands of yuan.

One book in Hu’s collection, is just such a treasure,   ghd straighteners  the book is not intrinsically valuable, its worth comes from this particular copy’s history: it was read by Xu Xiangqian on the road of the Long March, and has inscriptions on flyleaves and notes in margins.

However, such treasures are not something you come across every day. Because of the small number of good used books, used book dealers   ghd straighteners find it hard to stay in business and secondhand book fairs are shrinking. Wudaokou’s used book market disappeared in 2000 and there is only one regular used book market in town.

Price increases are another factor. “Before 2001, secondhand books were usually charged at 0.01yuan per spread. The development of the Internet, and the  ghd  increasing online demand for such books, has pushed their prices up to a point, where they now range from 5 yuan to 400 or 500 yuan.”

But Beijing is still a vibrant secondhand wonderland, thanks to its long history, and the fact it houses the largest number of institutions, universities and research centers in China.

Blog:Mantokuji temple offers devotees a chance to test their fortunes with a flush

Friday, February 26, 2010 | 9:18 pm

OTA CITY, Japan: ghd  Tired of an unsatisfying relationship, the sluggish economy or just your own bad habits? Now you really can flush it all down the toilet.

The Mantokuji temple in Japan’s central Gumma prefecture was once an asylum for women who wanted to cut marital ties with their husbands, a function now made obsolete by modern divorce laws and family courts.

Now, the temple is a museum chronicling the history of divorce as well as a place to help people get rid of any bad karma, via a piece of paper they drop into latrines.

Visitors are given two options: the  ghd hair straighteners white squat toilet for the “enkiri”, or cutting ties, or the black one for the “enmusubi”, or tightening ties.

“I severed the bind with obesity” said 69-year-old, tea ceremony instructor Shizue Kurokawa, after flushing her “enkiri” tag in the white latrine.

“I’m getting fat and it’s not healthy. From now on I’d like to lose weight, be in fine form and take care of my health.”

According to temple MBT  officials, most visitors still come with the purpose of breaking up with their partners, but most do so very discreetly.

Those willing to talk to Reuters had less private wishes.

“I work for a business company and things are not going well. What’s more, deflation is a problem everywhere in Japan,” said Kiyo Suzuki, a   ghd straighteners former employee at a steel production company. “So my prayer is that things may recover for all of us.”

Up until the 19th century, Mantokuji was one of only two women-only convents serving as a refuge for wives who wanted to leave with their husbands.

Women in those days had no legal rights to ask for a divorce, though all a man had to do was to write “I hereby divorce thee” in a letter to make the breakup official.

Convent officials would act as mediators between   ghd  the couple, and if a reconciliation was not possible, the officials made sure the wife had some sort of legal protection.

“In the past the Mantokuji was a divorce temple. There are only two in Japan and in the whole world,” explained the temple museum director Tadashi Takagi.

“Originally it provided the possibility to break off with bad relationships. Women used to come here to have legal protection and divorce from their   ghd straighteners husbands. So the idea today is that people get rid of the bad things in their life and become happy.”

Takagi said that with spirits and gods believed to inhabit practically everything in Japan, toilets are no different.

And among the million gods in the Japanese pantheon, the deity of the toilet, kawaya no kami, was considered just as important as the others    ghd hair straighteners since he was believed to heal illnesses and help in childbirth, Takagi added.

But ever since the symbolic latrines were installed, accidents have happened.

Previously in the repository of the China Cultural Heritage Information Consulting Center, these cultural relics include various items, ranging from Buddhist statuettes, jade works, porcelain ware, calligraphy and ink paintings, and ancient handicrafts, mostly cultural  ghd relics under State protection, according to administrate chief Shan Jixiang.

The relics join the 600,000 items in the collection of the National Museum of China. The museum has been undergoing large-scale expansion since March 2007 and is expected to become the largest museum in the world when completed next year,   ghd hair straighteners with a floor space of 192,000 sqm.

School canteens ’should be turned into restaurants’

Thursday, February 25, 2010 | 9:28 pm

Head Mbt teachers should consider serving food using proper tablecloths, crockery and cutlery to tempt pupils into traditionally drab dinner halls, it was claimed.

A report published by the School Food Trust also recommended altering the lighting and “mood” of canteens to stop children shunning nutritious meals in favour of potentially unhealthy packed lunches.

The Mbt  study suggested that changes to the atmosphere, queuing system and payment methods could increase the amount of food being eaten by a third.

The comments follow the publication of figures last year that showed most schoolchildren were refusing to eat school lunches following the introduction of new healthy menus inspired by Jamie Oliver, the television chef.

More than half of primary school pupils and two-thirds of those in secondaries shunned canteen food, despite a small rise in the last 12 months, it was disclosed.

The Mbt shoes  sale of high-fat and sugary food was banned from canteens and vending machines after Mr Oliver exposed the poor state of school dinners.

The School Food Trust – a quango set up to drive the healthy eating campaign – said new research showed “poor quality canteens” were the biggest barrier to children’s uptake of meals.

Judy Hargadon, trust chief   Ghd  executive, said: “It is clear that when children walk into a dining hall that is crowded, noisy and unattractive, they will vote with their feet, no matter what is on the menu.”

The MBT Shoes  trust recommended making “minor changes to the environment, such as staggering lunch queues to give children more time to eat, introducing tablecloths and replacing plastic plates, knives and forks with crockery and cutlery”. This had helped cut the amount of food being wasted at some schools by 38 per cent, said the trust.

A report published by the agency Mbt sale added: “The look and feel of the canteen – decor, lighting, mood and staff behaviour – can be a barrier to the uptake of school meals.”

The  Mbt sale  comments came as the trust launched a new campaign – Canteen Rescue – in which schools can win a professional makeover for their dinner hall

Blog:Missing my personal privacy

Thursday, February 25, 2010 | 9:14 pm

By now, most of you are trying to  ghd hair straighteners  recover from the excesses of the Chinese New Year holiday and are perhaps setting ambitious fitness goals to regain a slim waistline lost to a week of excessive eating, popping pills to get over a lingering cold brought on by the stress of travel or reeling from the utter loss of privacy and dignity suffered at the hands of visiting too many relatives.

Of the trials and tribulations that come with Chinese New Year gatherings, I find the latter the most difficult, especially in a small city MBT where your business is everybody’s business. And the most important business in the life of a young Chinese woman (and to some extent, a young man) is love, of course.

Here in Beijing, like everywhere else, singles suffer the obsessive matchmaking efforts and prying questions of their parents, parents’ friends, and elderly neighbors all year round. But in a small city – like the one where I spent the New Year –  ghd straighteners the pressure to fall in love, marry and procreate is truly unbearable.

In the big city, my friends (in their late 20s) are quite good catches, but in a rural setting, they would be called shengnv (leftovers). Last week, I watched with helplessness as a younger cousin sat through the onslaught of criticism about her “situation” with every wave of visitors arriving in our home:

“You can’t be too picky at this age. A so-so candidate is good enough.”

“What happened to that policeman you were dating last year? You never even brought him home for us to meet.”

“Do you have any prospects now? There’s a ghd single in my work unit. He’s a little short, but who cares about height? As long as he’s a good man.”

Those who are romantically involved aren’t spared scrutiny either.

Before the masses left their work in Beijing to head to remote hometowns, I watched another cousin deftly handle the delicate issue of what to do with her boyfriend. Bring him home for the holidays? Accept his invitation to visit his folks? In the end, she took the most prudent option, stayed in the city and spent the holiday alone.

It seemed like a harsh choice, ghd but it was for the best. Going home together – to either home – would’ve set off a firestorm of small town gossip (”Did you see so and so’s boyfriend? A Henan man!”). It also would’ve spurred overeager parents into pressing for a wedding date.

I thought the presence of my still-single cousins and a wedding ring on my hand this year would deflect attention from me. Alas, I learned that even the married don’t have it easy. My female relatives used any male-free occasion to remind me of the deteriorating state of my uterus.

While peeling potatoes: “Don’t wait too long.  ghd straighteners  The longer you wait, the harder the pregnancy.”

When washing fruit: “Women aren’t like men. A man can have a child when he’s 60, but you, you have to hurry.” Setting the table: “I don’t understand young people these days. How much money do you need to save up? A child hardly costs anything in the first few years.”

Faced with all this talk, my single female cousins and I resorted to the only politically correct response. We hung our heads low and muttered    ghd hair straighteners vague syllables of agreement while shoveling food into our mouths. Boy, I am glad to be back in Beijing where my business is still my business and even the nosy grandmas know when to stop chattering.

White House, Republicans Spar Over Extra Invitations to Summit

Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | 9:12 pm

A White House official tells ABC News Mbt shoes

that for months the president had been telling Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., and Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, that if there was a meeting like tomorrow’s bipartisan health care reform summit, they would be included.

Since the Democratic and Republican leadership didn’t ask either one of them to attend, President Obama extended invitations to them on his own.

Snowe decided not to attend.

“While she greatly appreciates the  discount Mbt shoes

invitation, the Republican leadership understood the rules of the summit, as established by the Administration weeks ago, were that the Democratic and Republican leadership would select their own members to participate in the event,” said Snowe spokesman John Gentzel. “The Republican leadership had long since selected their team and therefore, it would have been inappropriate for Senator Snowe, under those circumstances, to accept the invitation.”

Senate Republicans are not happy  Mbt  that the White House extended these invitations in violation of the original invitation and the subsequent coordination and negotiation, basically going around the GOP leadership’s back to invite Snowe.

Wyden accepted his invitation.

The president then told Republican leaders they can have another seat at the table.

A White House official says they did not specify whether it had to be a member of the House or Senate.

House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, says he’d been told it had to be a Republican senator.

In any case, Mr. Boehner had told the mbt sale  White House that an invitation should be extended to Michigan Rep. Bart Stupak – the antiabortion Democrat who has called “unacceptable” the language in the Senate bill that attempts to keep tax dollars from funding any abortion services. Stupak’s more restrictive antiabortion language passed the House by a vote of 240-194.

“I write today to respectfully ask that you invite Rep. Stupak to participate in the February 25 health care summit so that the will of the American people – and that of a bipartisan majority in the House – on the critical issue of life will be appropriately represented during the discussion,” Boehner wrote in a letter to President Obama today.

The White House says Republicans   Mbt can bring Stupak as their extra guest if they want.
