Better worker rights laws urged to tackle poverty

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 | 12:25 am

Laws protecting workers’ rights must be improved to tackle poverty, according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

It says the number of people MBT Shoes moving repeatedly between unemployment and work had risen by 60% since 2006.

The foundation said its research showed work is not a “sustainable route out of poverty” unless job security and low pay are also addressed.

The Department for Work and Pensions said it had committed £5bn to help people return to work.

The charity said about a fifth of poverty is ‘recurrent’, whereby people escape from poverty on a temporary basis.

Due to the recession’s effect on the Ghd job market, many workers have had no choice but to accept short-term contracts or temporary work.

Out of poverty

As a consequence, some have been left moving from earning low wages to earning no money on a regular basis. That means while they might move out of relative poverty – the escape is only temporary.

The charity says government policy MBT Shoe and legislation is failing to reflect this phenomenon and it is calling for changes, including improvements to the rights and conditions of employees.

Chris Goulden, poverty research manager at the foundation, said: “A plain message from the research is that employment does not provide a sustainable route out of poverty unless job security, low pay and lack of career progression are also addressed.”

He said that as employment grows more insecure “it is becoming ever clearer that getting a job does not provide a solution on its own”.

Minimum income levels

“This raises the worry that when it comes Mbt shoes to employment as a way of lifting people out of poverty, many are merely bumping along the runway and never taking off,” he said.

A Department for Work and Pensions spokeswoman said “work is the best route out of poverty”, which is why £5bn had been committed to getting people back to work, in addition to “welfare reforms which will keep everyone who can work, close to the labour market”.

She said: “The Better Off In Work credit   ghd hair straighteners will guarantee that everyone who has been on benefits for six months will be at least £40 a week better off when they go into work, so that we can guarantee that work will pay.

“Together with the national minimum wage, tax credits address in-work poverty by guaranteeing minimum levels of income for families.”

Blog:Lack of strikers forces Carlo Ancelotti to put trust in youngsters for festive fixtures

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 | 8:05 pm

Chelsea are facing a striker shortage for Mbt trainers  the crucial Christmas programme after Carlo Ancelotti confirmed yesterday that he has given permission for Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou to attend Ivory Coast’s African Cup of Nations training camp on Sunday.

In addition, Nicolas Anelka’s hamstring injury is worse than suspected and a scan yesterday revealed a slight tear that will keep him out for several weeks, leaving Ancelotti with Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini as his only available strikers for the West London derby with Fulham on Monday.

Chelsea’s festive fixture list, beginning with Saturday’s visit to Birmingham City, does not inspire trepidation but their squad is stretched to breaking point. Anelka and Michael Essien are injured, while Drogba, Kalou and John Obi Mikel will leave for the African Cup of Nations this weekend and may not return until the start of February ghd straighteners .

Ancelotti had been hoping to keep Drogba and Kalou until after Chelsea’s FA Cup third-round tie against Watford at Stamford Bridge on January 3, but a recent conversation with Vahid Halilhodzic, the Ivory Coast coach, has disabused him of that notion. Under Fifa rules, national associations have the right to call up their players 14 days before a tournament and Halilhodzic is sticking to his guns despite a plea from Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager.

“Officially the players have to go 14 days before the start of the African Cup of Nations,” Ancelotti said. “That starts on January 11. I spoke with the manager two weeks ago. He would like to have the players, Mbt all of them who are involved in the Premiership, on December 27. We cannot go against Fifa rules.”

Drogba’s early departure has been compounded by the injury to Anelka, whom Ancelotti had been relying on to steer him through a difficult period. Only yesterday Ancelotti revealed his intention to deploy the Frenchman as a lone striker next month, but must instead turn to Sturridge and Borini, because Anelka is unlikely to be fully fit before the Barclays Premier League match against Hull City on January 9.

Ancelotti is adamant that both youngsters have his confidence despite never having scored for the club, and claims that the lack of bodies will not force him to seek reinforcements in the transfer market next month ghd hair straighteners.

Sturridge has been limited by injury to five appearances since signing from Manchester City last summer, but did play a vital role in winning the controversial penalty converted by Frank Lampard against West Ham United on Sunday. Borini has played six matches this season as a substitute.

Sturridge will make his first Premier League start for the club alongside Drogba on Boxing Day and is likely to be partnered by Borini when Fulham visit Stamford Bridge.

“It’s not a good moment for his injury, but I think that Anelka will be back quickly,” Ancelotti said. “Sturridge has an opportunity to show his qualities. He played against West Ham very well in that second half and maybe against Birmingham he can play from the beginning.

“We have a lot of confidence in all my strikers. I didn’t ask for new players,Mbt sale we have good solutions internally, even if we lose the African players. ”

Chelsea’s Christmas results in recent years have been mediocre, but Ancelotti is confident his side can maintain their four-point lead in the Premier League.

“These are important games, but we are in a good position at the top,” he said. “We’re not in our best moment because we didn’t play well in the last few games, but because of this we have to stay concentrated to try and win our next matches.

“We play strong teams having very good results. The players are focused. They know it’s a very important moment in our season. Also, because we have some injuries, maybe it’s necessary to give something more.”

Blog:Carlo Ancelotti blames Manchester City defeat on midfield capitulation

Tuesday, December 8, 2009 | 1:12 am

Carlo Ancelotti will make several changes for Chelsea’s final Champions League group match against Apoel this evening, but those players rested may wish they had been given an opportunity to rebuild their reputations.

The Chelsea manager launched a candid attack yesterday on the performance of his midfield in last Saturday’s defeat by Manchester City, which leaves him with some selection issues before two Premier League home matches in the next week, against Everton and Portsmouth.

Chelsea’s midfield has been one of their greatest strengths in recent seasons, as they demonstrated nine days ago by overpowering Arsenal to claim a 3-0 win at the Emirates Stadium, but in Manchester they did not function effectively as a unit.

Ancelotti was unusually critical, accusing his midfield of capitulating under the weight of the home side’s pressure and failing to provide service for Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka. Because his observations were directed at senior players such as Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack, Michael Essien and Deco it must be assumed that Ancelotti meant every word, with the Portugal player likely to be fretting for his place after several lightweight displays.

“The problem was that Man City put strong pressure on our midfield after we scored and we were not able to play through from behind,” Ancelotti said. “They improved on their strength in the first half, so we had this difficulty. There was nothing else.

“When the opponent puts pressure on our midfield, we have to improve our support play, so we can open them up with the ball and use our offensive players like Anelka and Drogba. We had difficulty in getting service to Anelka and Drogba in the first half.”

After condemning his midfield, the Chelsea manager adopted a contrasting approach towards Petr Cech, who was at fault for both of City’s goals. The Czech Republic goalkeeper has made crucial mistakes in each of Chelsea’s three Premier League defeats this season, away to Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and City, but Ancelotti says he is the best in the country.

Cech’s rate of errors has increased dramatically since he suffered a fractured skull three years ago, particularly under the high ball, but Ancelotti claims that is because his custodian is unusually courageous.

The 27-year-old is rested tonight after being excused training yesterday, with Ross Turnbull standing by for a full debut, but will definitely return to face Everton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

“I am happy with Petr Cech,” Ancelotti said. “I like him because I never in my career had a goalkeeper that comes out as much and takes a risk to go for the ball. For this I like Cech. He has fantastic experience and knows very well when he makes a mistake.

“He could do better about the free kick on Saturday. I think the goalkeeper has to stay on his post and if the player puts the ball over the wall and into the net, we have to congratulate him. But even a good goalkeeper can make a mistake sometimes. Petr has been doing very well this season.

“I know goalkeepers. It is important above all in England to have a goalkeeper that comes out for crosses. I think that is the most important quality here — and, for this, Cech is the best goalkeeper in England.”

In addition to Turnbull, Ancelotti includes other young players in his squad, with Jeffrey Bruma, Daniel Philliskirk, Nikki Ahamed and Fabio Borini on the bench and Gaël Kakuta in contention to start his first game for the club. John Terry (knee), Ashley Cole (ankle) and Ballack (knee) will join Salomon Kalou and Alex, who are already on the sidelines.

“We have two aims,” he said. “One is to maintain a good position in our group — we’ve won four of five and want to finish with a good performance. Also, we have to have respect for the other teams because Apoel and Atlético Madrid are still competing for third place, an important place for them. We want to do the best.”
